A cat’s coat is constantly going through a shedding cycle – even their nails are part of it! The main difference in winter is that the resting phase (when the hair sits in the follicle after it’s fully grown) lasts longer. Cats also grow more coat, and grow it faster, during the colder months.
What does that mean?
Cats actually need more grooming in winter.
The most severely matted cats I see are often at the end of winter, when owners have waited as long as possible and the only option left is shaving — right when it’s coldest.
If you notice your cat’s coat starting to clump or “group” together, please get in touch early.
Preventing mats is always kinder than removing them later — mats are painful, and we much prefer to avoid shaving whenever possible.
