An introduction to grooming at an early age is a purrfect beginning for your pet’s happy grooming life.

Kitten Grooming

We recommend that kittens under six months of age have their first bath and blow-dry. We also give discounts to kittens that have their first grooming before six months of age, as we think it is essential for their coat care.

Kitten grooming can include nail clipping, nail caps, sanitary shaves, baths, and brushing.

A cat can take up to two years to develop a full adult coat, so it’s essential to understand that your kitten’s fur will require care as it changes.

Kittens are born with soft, downy fur, and their coat evolves as they grow out of the newborn stage. In most breeds, the “kitten coat” is generally shorter, softer, and less glossy than the adult fur they will have later. Between the ages of six and twelve months, as the kitten reaches adolescence, it will begin to shed its baby fur and grow the beautiful coat it will wear as an adult. Before this transition, cat owners may notice minimal shedding before this transition, but shedding will significantly increase during this period.

Like all mammals, cats have hair. That hair grows from follicles located in the skin. Cats have what are known as compound follicles, which means that as many as 30 hairs can grow from each follicle. By comparison, human follicles grow only one lonely hair each. As the kitten coat begins to pull away from the follicle to make room for the adult coat, you may suddenly find tumbleweeds of hair under the sofa and clumps on your best shirt.

Kittens are very noise-sensitive and jumpy, so around 4-6 months is ideal. We have you stay for your kitten’s first grooming, so there is no need to worry about what is happening to your kitty.

Regular grooming is a key part of responsible pet ownership. Kittens, especially longhairs and high maintenance breeds like Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and British Longhair, should have 6-12 weekly baths and brushes.  We recommend that Persian, Himalayan and Exotic cats are on a 4-6 weekly cycle for optimum coat maintenance. By staying informed and prepared, you can ensure your pet’s coat remains healthy and beautiful.
